When presented with the chance to speak as a TEDx speaker, I found it hard to narrow down what I wanted to discuss. As a climate justice education advocate, I really wanted to focus my attention to that topic, but I was warned not to drift into a political area (and the idea that climate justice is political was not up for debate). So, I turned my attention to something that I considered seriously for my dissertation: middle school and the death of the imagination. In my city, specifically, and all over the nation, middle schooling is killing creativity and curiosity in our kids. I see it as a high school teacher, and I am fearing what is coming as a parent of younger kids. My goal with this talk was to at least get people to think differently about middle school, to stop accepting the status quo... I know it will take a major paradigm shift in society to make any real change, but if I can convince parents to demand better for our kids, that is a start.
